Review: Lacybourne Manor

Lacybourne Manor
Lacybourne Manor by Kristen Ashley

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I haven't read a book as good as this in months. I rarely give a five stars rating to a book because I'm picky about what I read and like.
But this... this was amazing. I believe in reincarnation and so this book was perfect for me. There was a little part almost before the end when I wanted to know the ending so badly that I almost skipped to the final (good thing I didn't though). There was also one moment in the book when I thought I'd throw the book out and kept thinking "WHY MALLORY?!!!" But I kept reading and reached the epilogue... And oh God... I laughed! I did not expect that particular ending but it was all the more refreshing and better.
I'm already putting in my to read pile the other four books from this series and, if I'll have time (if I won't I'll make some), I'm going to try other series by the lovely Kristen Ashley. She is of now, among my favorite authors.

Review: Cinder

Cinder
Cinder by Marissa Meyer

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was amazing!

Cinder is a new, original approach on the Cinderella tale, only here, the main protagonist is named Cinder and she's a mechanic... and a cyborg. Living in the Eastern Commonwealth, Cinder spends her days repairing things in the market. It's there that she meets the Eastern Commonwealth crown-prince, Kai and where the action begins.
I liked how the story flowed in this book. I started reading it fully expecting disappointment after I've read another book recently which really let me down. Instead I found I loved this book. I've spent the last few hours reading it fervently. I couldn't put it down because every time I thought I knew how the story would progress, the author surprised me and dropped another plot twist in my lap.
It's a refreshing take on an old story and I'm glad to know that there will be a continuation. Can't wait to read that one as well!

Review: Strange Angels

Strange Angels
Strange Angels by Lili St. Crow

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book made me remember one of my favourite shows, Supernatural. It has zombies, loup-garous, dhampyrs, vampires and a whole assortment of supernatural beings which is really cool. Besides that though, it has a lot of funny moments and some lines that made me laugh out loud.
I look forward to the next books in the series and I'm going to search other books written by this author.

Shadows

Yey! I finally read Shadows by Jennifer L. Armentrout, the prequel to Obsidian.
This is the story of Dawson, Daemon's twin brother (just as hot!) and also a Luxen alien.

The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane.

Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.

Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in.

Captivated. Lured. Loved.

Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence...and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

Review: The Summoning

The Summoning
The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a much darker story than what I've read in a while. But, while the beginning wasn't exactly my cup of tea, what followed was great. A really good story, with really good characters. The idea of making a sanatorium the main location for the story is brilliant!
I recommend this book and look forward to reading the next in the series.

Review: The Initiation

The Initiation
The Initiation by L.J. Smith

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Interesting book and a great start to a series. I like how the author created the characters, very different from each other, somehow as if they complete, create a whole only by being together.
I've read this series a few years back and then watched the series on TV. Not exactly the same and I have to say, the books are vastly different than the TV-series.
This is a book I'd recommend if you like love stories and witches.

Obsidian

Starting over sucks.
When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.
And then he opened his mouth.
Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens.
The hot alien living next door marks me.
You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.
If I don't kill him first, that is.

This was the funniest book I've read in quite some time. Daemon, the male lead is sarcastic, ironic, funny, arrogant and a complete jerk sometimes. He's also nice and caring when the need arises. Also... he's an alien. :D PLOT TWIST! Yeah, it was really something to read about aliens. I think I've read about dozens of things as main characters (werewolves, vampires, ghosts, elves, banshees, witches, kitsune, and so on) but this is the first time I've read about aliens (and I don't mean here stories about UFO's and shit).
The female lead, Katy, moves with her mom to a backwater town where she meets her neighbor, Daemon and his sister, Dee. Dee and Katy become fast friends even if Dee's brother doesn't approve of this. In fact, Daemon tries to be as obnoxious as possible to drive Katy away. But underneath it all, there is romance, and while they fight and argue almost throughout the book, Katy and Daemon are so obviously attracted to each other that is kinda of annoying to see Daemon fight his urges to kiss and touch her.
Funny thing about this book: there are countless times where the author makes fun of the Twilight series. Now, I own and read the Twilight books and when I read them (I think I was seventeen) those book seemed perfectly ok. I was 17 with the need to read everything and like most things. So, while I occasionally make fun of some stuff, I also prefer to think myself capable of seeing both parts of the coin. I read those books and at the time liked them. Would I read them now? Probably not. Would I like them? Again, probably not. But J. Armentrout makes fun of those books while incorporating some similar stuff in hers so, it seems kinda ironic. I mean, Eddie sparkles, Daemon is a being of light. Similar. There are several instances where one character watches the other sleep. Kinda ironic you see?
Don't get me wrong, this is a GOOD book, among those I like. But it has some stuff in it that rubbed me the wrong way.
Either way, I recommend it (especially because of the half-naked scenes:P).

Here is a list of books written by the same author (Jennifer Armentrout):
 J.A. Booklist
I've only read Obsidian, Half-Blood and Daimon from that list but I'm catching up.

The Historian

I finished yesterday "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova, a huge book that took me awhile to read, not because it was boring but because it was very long.
The story is a mix of letters from several persons, postcard messages and stories within the main story of events that happened before the present day. However, what I liked best was that it wasn't an ordinary book, the letters and postcards and everything else being so well integrated into the story that I was always under the impression it was a single, uninterrupted event.
The characters are strong and well-defined, passionate and loyal.
History of Vlad Tepes and folklore of Dracula are blended in this book, creating a story that spans ages, from the time when Tepes ruled, after his death and to the present day when mysterious books, empty save for the dragon illustration in the middle, start appearing on the desks of promising historians. The mystery of the books is followed through the entire book by said people and information is gathered separately by all throughout the years. It takes a young man from Oxford in search of his mentor to put together the pieces and solve the puzzle.
I honestly first picked up the book because on the back cover it said something about Dracula. I love vampire books, movies, everything to do with them. And although in most cases I'm disappointed of the stories, this was not the case. The author herself, said at the end of the book that she didn't plan on having more than a cup of blood spilled in her book. I think she managed that. She created a plot that keeps the reader in suspense, gives him a love story, mystery and most of all, makes his imagination recreate the bloody scenes in the book (and here I mean the ones described as the crimes of  Tepes).
I recommend this book not only to those who like vampire stories but to anyone who like stories!

Orcs

"An orc is one of a race of mythical human-like creatures, generally described as fierce and combative, with grotesque features and often black, grey or greenish skin. This mythology has its origins in the writings of J. R. R. Tolkien.
These creatures have since become popular figures in other fantasy and science fiction literature as well as many types of fantasy games. They are variously portrayed as physically stronger or weaker than humans, but always high in numbers. They often ride boars, wolves and wargs. In many role-playing and computer games, orcs have green or greenish skin (earning the name 'Greenskins' in such games as Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000). Usually, and in contrast with other fantasy races such as Elves, orcs use shamanistic magic, or no magic at all. Their fighting skill is honed to maximum power and efficiency." - Wikipedia

The first I heard of orcs was when I read Lord of the Rings. I think I was around 13 years old and it was a relatively new addition to the library in my neighborhood. I remember taking the three huge volumes of the shelf and reading the back cover on the first. It hooked me in an instant. I took them home and read them in that weekend. I don't think I did anything else during those three days beside reading, eating a bit and sleeping for a few hours. I was amazed by the brilliance of the story, the depth of the characters and the beautiful depictions of the environment. It became my favorite book. Years later, in 2007 I believe, I found the entire story in one book (huge, heavy and bright red with golden letters on the cover). It cost me a lot of money but it was worth it and now it sits proudly on my shelf next to a lot of other favorite books of mine.
Needless to say, I saw the movies and loved those as well.
Another time I encountered orcs in stories was when I started playing Warcraft III. A colleague from high school gave it to me and I played it non stop for a few days, redoing a lot of the campaigns in the beginning because, truth be told, I was a complete newbie at computer games back then. Warcraft III became one of my favorite games because of its Orc Campaign. I still play that campaign again and again, not because it's the easiest but because I get to play the orcs in the game. The depiction of the orcs was different here than it was in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Not better, not worse, just different, and that made me enjoy it all the more.
And now I come to the real subject of this very long and tiresome post. Still with me?
A few months ago some new books with the orcs as the main characters appeared in my country. They were written by Stan Nicholls and made up a trilogy. It is named Orcs: First Blood. It was originally published in the UK around 2000 and it has sold over a million copies worldwide since.
These books are among the first in which the main characters are orcs (from all the books I've read).
The books tell the story of a band of orcs that are sent into a mission by their Queen. When the mission fails they try and recover the artifact that their Queen needs in order to keep their jobs and heads. But since they don't come back from the mission on time, the Queen considers them traitors and sends other orcs, bounty hunters and dragons after them.
On the run, the orcs recover the artifact and find new ones as well which lead the story to an interesting conclusion. The entire three books are filled with battle scenes, dreams, spells and twists that stop you from putting the books down.
The descriptions of the battle scenes are amazing, you can feel as if you're watching them, being part of them. The entire orc society that is described in the books define the characters.
The ending seemed a little abrupt but then I read there will be another trilogy so I'm guessing the story isn't over just yet.
These are a few pictures I found on the author's website and mostly look like how I imagined the characters would be:
Strike
Jup
From what I found on Imdb.com, sadly there aren't any scheduled movies for this series, which seems a shame considering what great scenes there would be in them.
To conclude, I need to read more orc books because the ones I've read I liked. I like the fantasy genre so here's to more books like these!

Scott Westerfeld

Scott Westerfeld is the author of some of my favorite books. Born in 1963, he's written almost 20 books, half of which I've read and loved and the other that is going on my to be read list.
The first series I've read written by him was Midnighters.
The first book in the series, The Secret Hour, tells the story of Jessica Day who moves with her family to Bixby. There, Jessica finds out she's actually a midnighter, a person born on the exact stroke of midnight and thus able to enjoy the extra hour in the day that normal humans aren't allowed. Because in Bixby the world has 25 hours instead of 24. For a midnighter, the extra hour also means they have to be careful of the creatures that live in the place governed by the Blue Hour.
Confusing? It may seem so and it was one of the reasons I only read this book late after I got it. But once I started reading the Book Fairy knocked me with her wand and glued the book to my fingers.
Joke aside though, this book is good and it opens the way to Touching Darkness and Blue Noon, the sequels in this series, where Jessica and the rest of the crew manage to save the world.
Did I forget to mention that?
Silly me. Jessica is accompanied shortly by Dess, Rex, Jonathan and Melissa in the fight against Darklings and Slithers, the big, bad creatures that live in the Blue Hour (the 25th hour).
I'm not a big fan of writing reviews (only reading them from time to time) so, if you want to know more about these books: read them!

You can buy the books here:
The Secret Hour Touching Darkness Blue Noon

The second series was the Uglies. Amazing one as well. One of the first dives I've made at science-fiction novels, from fantasy and romance.
The series is comprised of three novels and a companion novel: Uglies, Pretties, Specials and Extras.
"Uglies is set in a world in which everyone has an operation when they turn sixteen, making them supermodel beautiful. Big eyes, full lips, no one fat or skinny. You might think this is a good thing, but it’s not. Especially if you’re one of the Smokies, a bunch of radical teens who’ve decided they want to keep their own faces. (How anti-social of them.)." ~ Scott Westerfeld's website

WARNING! THERE BE SPOILERS AHEAD!

...your call...

The main character, Tally Youngblood, close to turning 16, can't wait to turn pretty and have all the fun that derives from that status. But then Tally meets Shay, a girl who doesn't want to turn pretty and later, David, an ugly that was born outside the city, something unheard off. Together, they want to pull a prank before their operations just to go off with a bang. Things go awry and Shay runs off to Smoke with David. Tally is then forced to go after her and bring her back or stay stuck being an ugly forever. After finding Smoke and seeing how life on the outside is, Tally is reluctant to return and betray the rebels and David who she fall for. But through a mistake word gets back to the city and Special Circumstances come and destroy Smoke, taking the uglies back.
In the second book we find Tally and Shay pretties with bubbly heads, superficial and in search of danger. They join the Crims and Tally befriends Zane, the leader of the Crims and drifts apart from Shay which leaves the Crims and forms her own group called the Cutters. Getting some special pills from her friends in New Smoke, Tally splits the pills with Zane, hoping they would make them clear-headed enough to escape to the wilderness. But, while Tally gets better, Zane gets headaches.
The escape finally but are followed by a tracking device implanted in Zane's tooth. To save the rest of New Smoke and David, Tally stays with the now sick Zane and hurts David in order to make him leave. The plan works and Special Circumstances' people come (Specials) with Shay, who take the two back to the city.
The third book shows Tally and Shay being friends again, both of them Specials. This books ties many loose ends and finishes with Tally overthrowing the governing people from the city.

END OF SPOILERS!

These books were among the first that dealt with a single girl, intelligent and with allies, managed to overthrow a government. The first that I've read in any case. I had a very strong sense of deja-vu when I've read The Hunger Games later and recently Divergent. Different stories, basic plot underneath all the words. I'm not criticizing. I rather like it actually.

Extras could even be read as a stand-alone novel though it wouldn't make a lot of sense to those not familiar with the Uglies universe. However, it was a very good book and as, the author said, four is <<the secret definition of the word "trilogy">>. :)
You can buy the Uglies trilogy here and Extras here.

The third series, and my favorite by far, is the Leviathan trilogy.
This is the best steampunk trilogy I've ever read. It has gears and wheels and cogs and gigantic machinery all mixed with live airships, Darwinists and Clankers, ships made of life threads and most importantly a friendship and love story between a commoner girl dressed as a Midshipman on the Leviathan and the Prince of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Another complicated story? Yes, a bit. Not being familiar with the speech, it sometimes took me two readings of the same sentence to understand it. But that's mostly because I didn't know as much English when I first read the books as I do now.
I read Leviathan some time ago and was fascinated by it. Behemoth proved easier to read, after having gotten myself familiar with the language in the first book. But I loved Goliath by far, probably because of the ending, which I can't say for a lot of books. Writers have a way of spoiling the endings or leaving them hanging. This however concludes the story, leaves a lot to the imagination and still manages to make me love the book.
The characters aren't exaggeratedly drawn as heroes and heroines, just people following their duty, destiny and pure chance sometimes. And I don't mean drawn only in a figurative way of speech. The books have drawings as well, which made the understanding of the descriptions a hundred times easier.
This is one series I'm not going to spoil for anyone. It's too good for that and a lover of books would get swayed with what I've already said above.
Here are a few pictures though, to make up your mind about reading this beautiful series:

The last picture isn't actually in any of the books, it is however found on the author's website, along with a short extra chapter: Read Here

Enjoy!

19 - 21

I've just finished reading (drooling over) a wonderful book titled "Nineteen - Twenty-One".
19-21 is a manga written by Yohan and drawn and colored by Jenna (Kim Hye Jin). Not only was it fully colored which added a special feeling to the reading material but it also had cats!
I love cats! They are majestic and carefree and also cats always calm me. I can have fun playing with a dog or engage in an all out word-war with parrots or even make funny faces at turtles but it's only cats that really calm and relax me. Coming home after a stressing day and just petting my cats and hearing them purr suddenly makes me see the world with different eyes, a better place than it actually is.
I'm straying from the subject however.
19-21 is a story about a girl and a boy who start to take care of stray cats, it is a story about how they manage to change the thoughts of small-minded people about cats and ultimately it's the story of how important it is to see the world around us as filled with beings that survive with little to nothing and still manage to live life to the fullest without being sad.
You can read the whole story here:
http://www.mangafox.com/manga/nineteen_twenty_one/
The art is beautiful (a plus really but I would've read it even only for the story) and I like the ending.
Not every battle needs to be with the entire world. If you manage to change the heart of even one person then you can say you've spent your time wisely.
Enjoy the story, buy the volume (I'm going to) and feed a stray!
Until next time. I'm going to find my cats now.

New Blog

I've decided to post my stories online. Otherwise I'm afraid I'll never get the incentive to finish them. I'll start with the one I've work the most and longest at. It's had various names over the years, some being: "The Veil", "The Hidden World", "The Heiress", "The 9th Circle"... For now, I'm just naming it "The Witching Hour"... Not because there is a reason behind it but just because I like the sound of it.
In any case, I made another blog where I'm only going to post the chapters of the stories and maybe some sketches for each chapter.
I'll try to write at least a chapter every week. If not more.
I'm still keeping this blog. I have to rant somewhere...:D

http://zombiedeskmesmeria.blogspot.com/

I tried just mesmeria.blogspot.com... but it was taken so, what the hell, I might as well make the new thing a sub of Zombie Desk.:)

Edit: I added more to this list since I'm too lazy to make a new list and I haven't exactly finished the ones here.

Edit: I made an account on Goodreads.com and since I'm too lazy to keep updating this list, you can see my read/to read/currently reading lists over there.
I'm still in the process of putting books into the read pile. I've read hundreds of books until now so there are a lot of them.

Meridian

My name is Meridian Sozu. I am a Fenestra. I have always shared my world with the dead and the dying. But I really didn't understand what that meant until I turned sixteen and glimpsed my own mortality. . .

Sixteen-year-old Meridian has always been surrounded by death. As a child, insects, mice, and salamanders burrowed into her bedclothes to die. As she grew, the animals got bigger, and soon they were finding her at school to die in her presence. Meridian became an outcast, labeled by her classmates as Reaper, Gravedigger, and Witch. Each death she witnesses weakens her body, and loneliness weakens her spirit.
On her sixteenth birthday, she witnesses a deadly car crash. Though she’s untouched, Meridian's body explodes with the victims’ pain.

Before she can fully recover, Meridian is told that she's a danger to her family and rushed to her great-aunt's house in Revelation, Colorado. It's there that she learns the secret her mother has been hiding her entire life: that she is a Fenestra, the half-angel, half-human link between the living and the dead. It's crucial that she learn how to transition human souls to the afterlife and preserve the balance between good and evil on earth. But Meridian and her sworn protector and love, Tens, face great danger from the Aternocti, a band of dark forces who capture vulnerable souls on the brink of death and cause chaos. Dark, lovely, and lushly romantic, MERIDIAN introduces a powerful heroine who will entrance readers.

This was a lovely book, a little dark, fun and beautifully written. I couldn't put it down before finishing it (then again, I do that with most books).

I forgot to put a link to the book for the other one (the Madison Avery book), so I'll repost that one with a link.

This is a link to this book that I found on the internet:

Once Dead, Twice Shy by Kim Harrison

- SPOILERS AHEAD,MATES! -

The number one book in the Madison Avery's series (not counting number zero:D - Madison Avery and the Dim Reaper - published in the Prom Nights from Hell anthology) tells the story of a girl whose body has been stolen by the dark reapers' hot and sexy boss (with whom she's already shared a kiss) and who is now trying to destroy her soul.
Madison is the new girl at school, not really caring she isn't liked by the popular crowd who mostly consists of bullies and mean, empty-headed girls. She doesn't fit in with the other cliques either though. Most likely because dying changed her priorities a bit.
Hide from Kairos. Try not to let the black wings get you. Get body back. Make friends at school.

I've started reading the anthology out of boredom and never expected to be so hooked on it. Madison Avery and the Dim Reaper made me laugh at the witty remarks and it felt good to read something new without the overused subjects.
I mean, the girl dies in the first book and she then proceeds to steal a very powerful amulet from the very guy who kissed and killed her. What subject is better that that? Throw in some light reaper material made of Barnabas, a fallen angel who is supposed to teach Madison about the amulet she stole and claimed as her own, a human boy named Josh who first acted as a jerk but quickly reassess his opinions when he gets to really know Madison. And of course, there is Kairos, the timekeeper/Madison's killer/boss of the dark reapers who wants Madison dead for reasons that keep you reading until the end of the book (don't worry, those reasons aren't used as a cliffhanger for the next book). Chronos, the leader of the light reapers, also named Ron (which makes me think of Harry Potter's sidekick) plays a big role in the story as well since he keeps Madison's situation from reaching the higher ups (seraphs) ears. Another important character, from my opinion anyway, is Nakita, a dark reaper, older than time, who ends the story with a bang (I really hadn't expected her to do what she did).
All in all, the story was amazing and the heroine's style unforgettable and I can't wait to read the next book, Early to Death, Early to Rise.

Here's one of my favourite parts in the Once Dead, Twice Shy book:

I stared at my amulet. It was beautiful, the black stone glinting with tiny silver lights at its
center like stars. I couldn’t look at the seraph’s face, it hurt so much, but I felt like it was
smiling at me. “Madison, fate—not choice—sent Kairos to kill you. Fate gave you
courage to claim his amulet. Fate caused Chronos to hide you from us. It has been fate
that angled a hundred moments to bring you here. And yet, you have to choose to accept
your place or return as you were.”
Still I hesitated from going back. “Which would you choose?” I asked. “If you could.”
The seraph laughed. “Neither, I am me. Choice? Fate? They are the same. I cannot see
the difference. It is why only a human can twist time to his or her will. When you fly high
enough, seeing around the corners of time is not a problem, but it makes separating the
future and the past difficult.”
